Earlier this month, I took the number 28 tram through the streets of Alfama in Lisbon. I brought a video camera with me. In the lunchtime rush I was lucky enough to get a seat by an open window so I had the perfect vantage point to capture all the ups and downs of what is in my opinion, Lisbon’s most beautiful district. Looking at the finished result, it’s only now that I can appreciate what a unique and colourful journey it is.
If you ever get the chance, I can’t recommend enough that you leave your Lisbon car hire at your accommodation for a few hours and take the opportunity to board the vintage style tram. It’s the best way to get close to the historic heart of the Portuguese capital. Okay so you have to be patient with the clanging bells and tentative hill starts but the experience is definitely more than worth the €2 ticket fare.
You never know what surprises you’ll find around the hairpin bends. See for yourself in my video. Look out especially for the delicately peeling paintwork, traditional azulejo tiles, billowing washing lines and sunflower-spangled terrace…
