American Airlines Cancels Thousands of US Flights
Posted on April 11, 2008 by Fiona Hilliard
Argus Car Hire Customers taking connecting flights to their US car hire destination face flight delays by American Airlines for the fourth day running.
In total, around 570 flights will not run today, following the grounding of more than 930 yesterday, 1,094 on Wednesday and 460 on Tuesday.
The disruption has been caused by the safety requirement to check the carrier’s fleet of MD-80s following a Federal Aviation Administration ruling relating to wiring in the wheel well of the narrowbody aircraft.
132 MD-80s returned to service yesterday, with 170 due to be available for service by this morning.
Over 100,000 passengers were caught up in this week’s cancellations and the airline is offering compensation to those ‘inconvenienced with overnight stays’. For information on compensation payouts, visit aa.com.
The airline issued an apology for the inconvenience and chairman and chief executive Gerard Arpey said he is taking full responsibility.
