Australians Take Holidays to Help Economy

Posted on December 08, 2008 by Fiona Hilliard

Take a holiday and help the economy.  Sounds like a good plan all around.  But seriously, it could only happen in Australia.  Last week, the Aussie government came up with a plan to urge workers to down tools/pens/whatever brings home the bacon (not Irish we hope) to take a well-deserved break.  And long over-due it is too.
Collectively, the country’s 11 million workers have stock-piled almost 121 million days of paid leave entitlements, which the government wants to tap into to boost the country’s tourism sector.

Australian Tourism minister Martin Ferguson told officials he would hold meetings with major employer groups this week to jumpstart a “No Leave, No Life” campaign.

Mr Ferguson has his sights firmly set on the A$31 billion (13.5 billion pounds) of holiday pay owed to workers and is leading the campaign to persuade businesses t make sure employees take their holidays.
