Bmi Baby to the Rescue
Â
And so the airline industry’s giant game of musical chairs continues. In the wake of yesterday’s bombshell by Easyjet that it is cutting all flights to East Midlands airport, bmibaby has just announced that it is adding extra capacity across its network to serve regional passengers who have been left high and dry.
Commenting on the rescue plan, Managing Director Crawford Rix said: “We want to reassure the people of the region that we will remain committed to East Midlands airport.
As a result of EasyJet’s decision to leave the airport, we will be increasing capacity over our current network over the next 48 hours so that the East Midlands continues to have the capacity it needs.
East Midlands Airport is home to bmibaby and we are currently exploring other opportunities to fill the gap left by EasyJet at the airport.”
It’s been a tough couple of weeks for European air travel industry, with Slovakian carrier SkyEurope shutting up shop on Tuesday and Aer Lingus reporting losses of €93 million (£81 million) last week.Â
According to recent forecasts, British Airways is also in serious trouble, as is Scandinavian airline SAS.
Somewhere, Michael O’ Leary is lying in wait, ready to monopolize.
**Speaking of Ryanair, the budget airline announced today that it is to increase its luggage charges by 50%. Anyone checking in from October 1st will find that the charge for bags carried in the hold of the aircraft will rise from £20 to £30 for luggage checked in at the airport. Meanwhile, the hold baggage charge for online check-in will increase from £10 to £15.**
