Bulgaria is one of those eastern European destinations that has continued to grow in popularity with both winter ski and summer holidaymakers in spite of recent economic worries.
Tempting as it may be to flop by the pool or snooze by a cosy log fire for the duration of your stay, those who do miss out on the county’s most beautiful cities and countryside.
But wait. Before you jump behind the wheel and head out on the open road, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind when driving in Bulgaria.
- Smaller, country roads (there are lots of them) can be rough sometimes and care should be taken when travelling on these.
- Renters should also be extra vigilent when driving at night, as unlit farm vehicles and animals sometimes prove dangerous hazards.
- Petrol stations are a rare site, but if you do come across one, it’s best to stick to tried and trusted brands.
- As with most countries, children must be aged at least 12 years before they can sit in the front seat. It is also compulsory for all passengers to wear seatbelts.
- Speed limits for driving in built-up areas is 80kph (50mph) or 120kph (75mph) on major roads. Should you be stopped for committing a traffic offence, police may issue you with a ticket. On the spot fines are non-existent. It is illegal to talk on mobile phone while driving.
- Drivers should always check that their vehicle has been supplied with the following before leaving their Bulgaria car hire pick-up station: A red warning triangle, a reflective green or orange vest, a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher.
