Car Hire Checks

Car hire can be a minefield for the uninitiated.  First-time bookers find  numerous terms and procedures that you don’t really have to deal with when booking say flights or accomodation online.  Confusion is all too common.  With this in mind, we’ve come up with a handy guide, outlining what you can expect when you’re hiring a car.

Damage Excess Waivers Explained:

If a vehicle has been damaged the driver is to pay liable to pay the first amount of the repair bill.  Depending on where you’re travelling that could be well over £1,000 (€1300).  For this reason, it’s wise to take out a Damage Excess Waiver.  This usually costs just £2.50 per day and allows the excess paid to be paid back to you at the end of your trip, as long as your supplier is sent a police and accident report from the local company.

How To Select Your Ideal Car:

If you’re planning to travel with the same car on a road trip, it is worth considering the following carefully:

Think about your luggage requirement, how many passengers you’re travelling with, your personal budget, how comfortable the car is and how economical the car is.

What to Double-Check:

  • Do I/Driver hold a full driving license?
  • Which car hire firm am I meeting when I get to my destination?
  • Do I have breakdown assistance?
  • Do I need a baby/child seat, a roof rack, ski rack?
  • Will the office be open when we arrive?
  • Will the vehicle be big enough to accommodate everyone and their luggage.
  • Do I know what the procedure is for returning the car?
