The following question comes from a customer called Rebecca who’s planning a road trip to Florida with Orlando car hire:

Hi Fiona

I’m in the middle of planning a trip to Orlando with a group of friends this November.  We’re all aged 25 years and under.  I have held a full driving licence for nearly seven years and it’s my 25th birthday in January. Do extra charges still apply?

Rebecca, Manchester

Hi Rebecca

In this case, car hire companies do not take your driving experience into consideration.  Unfortunately, because you are under 25, you will be liable to pay a “Young Driver’s Surcharge”.  This charge is applied by all of the main car hire companies, and usually works out at around $25 (£17/€19) a day.

You didn’t say how many people you were travelling with, but if you are travelling with a large group, you might find that an eight, 12 or 15-seater minivan might be your cheapest (and most comfortable) option.

US destinations definitely benefit from renting a car. Orlando car rental will certainly offer you man more travel options than public transport or organised tours. Aside from Disneyworld and Universal Studios, other places worth checking out include the Florida Everglades and the Kennedy Space Centre. There are a number of nice state parks in the area too including Paynes Prairie and Torreya State Park. Some nice scenic drives that you might like to try are the journeys from New Smyrna Beach to Canaveral National Seashore and Lake Wales to Lake Kissimmee. For more scenic drive suggestions, see All Getaways.

Have a great trip!

Fiona
