Up to 10 million UK drivers are set to brave the Big Freeze today in attempts to make their way home for Christmas.
The AA estimates that one in three of Britain’s cars will be taking to the roads and have urged drivers to exercise caution as thawing conditions bring black ice.
Several major routes across the UK are still considered hazardous. Yesterday Aberdeen was labelled “mayhem” by police, while the M4 Severn was closed due to falling ice from overhead cables.
Airlines are also making efforts to get thousands of passengers home before Christmas Eve.
Budget carrier EasyJet fears that it is running out of seats for customers left stranded after a fourth day of disruption.
Things are looking up at Gatwick however. A representative has said that operations are gradually returning to normal.
Monday night’s heavy snowfall has a lot to answer for. This week, the AA said it experienced its highest number of call-outs in 10 years, with flat batteries, tyre damage and electrical problems topping the list of complaints.
The RAC has advised people to put off non-essential travel until warmer conditions kick in as the week goes on.
Meanwhile, thousands of Eurostar passengers were finally able to travel between London, Paris and Brussels yesterday, but the company’s chief executive has warned that limited services will continue until after Christmas.
