Driving Abroad with a UK Licence

Hi Fiona

I’ve decided to rent a car from Malaga Airport this summer.

I’m 62 and currently I hold a paper driving licence (UK), but this doesn’t expire for a few more years.
Do I need the new photographic type of licence or will the paper licence suffice?
Alternatively, will I need to bring my UK passport as a back-up while driving in Spain to support my licence?

Hi Rosemary

Thanks for your question. It might be best to update your licence to the new pink photographic type.
Contrary to what you might think, it is actually quite easy to get a photocard licence. If you were recently re-issued with a passport, the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency) will be able to obtain a biometric photo from the UKPA (United Kingdom Passport Agency).

You should take along the green paper counterpart too – just in case.

Hope this helps answer your question.

Enjoy Malaga!

Fiona
