It seems like only yesterday when Charlize Theron was plucking Ireland out of the draw for this year’s FIFA World Cup in South Africa.  If only she wasn’t joking.

Anyway, enough of the Irish violins. With World Cup fever everywhere else reaching delirious point, I thought the time was ripe to bring you my pick of the best side-trips and touring hotspots in South Africa.

Over the next few days, the Glove Box Blog will be presenting you with His, Hers and Family recommendations for those planning to hit the road in SA this June.

First up: Man about Zulu Township

So what’s to do in Durban on an in-between-match day? In truth - not a whole lot, which is why Zululand makes for the perfect side-trip.

The Zulu cultural area encompasses a range of interesting pit stops, from Richard’s Bay and the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal to Ulundi, Eshowe, Vryheid and Paulpietersburg.

Entering Zululand, you’ll experience every inch the silver screen representation of rural South Africa – tranquil green hills, swaying grassy plains, thick forests and a calm, unhurried outlook on life.  With surroundings like these, it’s not hard to see why the Zulu Nation fought so hard to keep this land.  From the roots of its grassy plains to the heartfelt beat of its tribal drums, this whole area is steeped in symbolism and tradition. The village of Shakaland is just one traditional homestead that invites you to into the fold to appreciate Zulu culture at its best.

Shakaland

Shakaland is a traditional Zulu “Umuzi”, or homestead, that was transformed into a tourist attraction after providing the set for the movies Shaka Zulu and John Ross.  Visitors can watch grace and energy personified in the traditional dances and drum demonstrations and observe the skill and artistry that goes into making spears, shields, beadwork, clay pots, as well as beehive hut buildings.  Oh, and you might even be offered a Zulu beer. If you’re feeling brave enough, there’s also the opportunity to visit a real-life iSangoma (witch doctor).

Directions from Durban:

Shakaland is located in the centre of Zululand, next to Eshowe and Melmoth.  It is located at the top of the Entombeni Hills which overlook the Phobane Lake.

To get to Shakaland from Durbam. follow the N2 North and turn left at Dokodweni Toll Plaza on the R66/Melmoth/Ulundi. Shakaland is situated 14km past Eshowe.

Entry to Shakaland including traditional Zulu lunch costs 195 Rand (£18 per person).
