Ibiza is the third largest of the Balearic Islands, with an area of just 225 square miles (585 square km). What it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in terms of reputation. Ibiza’s wild all-night parties were the talk of the British tabloid media for just about all of the 1990s.
In recent years it has cleaned up its act and is now the holiday destination of choice for the rich and famous. The island’s hedonistic clubs are all still standing and present, but so too is the beautiful coastline, which is a joy to discover with Ibiza car hire.
The Island’s capital is the seaside town of Ciudad de Ibiza, locals call it Eivissa, but you’re probably more familiar with the name Ibiza Town, as christened by the Brits. You’ll find it in the south of the island, in the heart of Ibiza’s nightclub district. It has a pretty marina (choc-full of flash yachts) and a charming old quarter with some nice restaurants. From here it is just a short drive to the beautiful beaches of Figueretes, Es Cavallet and Ses Salines.
Most holidaymakers flock to San Antonio, Ibiza’s main resort town. Sad but true, the first thing you’ll notice as you enter the town is the towering high-rise hotels and apartment complexes. Unfortunately, local authorities still haven’t found a way to mask these.
If you’re curious about the infamous party scene, then make a beeline for the island’s two most well-known clubs, Es Paradis and Eden. After more of a chilled out holiday? There are some natural, unspoilt coves nearby which are famous for their clean, safe waters. Get up early if you want a good spot on these beaches! If you like your beaches a little more exclusive, hitch a ride on the ferry to Formentera, a tiny island located just off the coast.
