Superstitions did nothing to dampen the spirits of organisers of the water-themed Expo 2008 in Zaragoza last Friday 13th, when King Juan Carlos of Spain declared the three-month international event officially open.
In his opening speech, the Spanish monarch said:
“In its outstanding pavilions, with words, images, art and music, this exhibit aims to bring the world’s attention to water as a precious resource, unsubstitutable for man and earth.”
Spanish authorities say they chose the theme of water because it is an issue of growing concern to the world and one that constantly causes debates and disputes in Spain.
A total of 106 countries are taking part in the forum and organisers expect 6 million visitors.
The city of Zaragoza is situated halfway between Madrid and Barcelona. Currently low cost carrier Ryanair offers direct flights to its airport from European cities. Authorities hope the fair will launch the city internationally and have invested heavily in improving the cityscape. Car hire is the perfect way to get to grips with the attractions of the city over the next few months.
