The Algarve’s location on the southern coast of Portugal lends itself to countless scenic routes.  Year round sunshine and picturesque coastal towns make the Algarve the perfect destination for those who’ve booked Faro car hire and are planning to head out on a day trip. Thinking of doing just that? Let the following five suggestions provide some food for thought if you’re eager to see more than just the beach on your next holiday.

1. Faro to Salerna

Pick up your Faro car hire and head west towards Lagos.  Soon you’ll come to the N125 which takes you to the Villa do Bispo.  Make your way to the N268 and drive to Sagres.  You’ll find that many of the side roads along the way, especially the one that leads to the pretty little town of Salerma are also worth the effort.

2. Sagres

From the little town of Salerna, head to Sagres, commonly known as the westernmost point of Europe.  This route provides drivers with some of the most stunning vistas in the Algarve.  This is the perfect place to photograph (or just sit back and enjoy) glorious sunsets and beautiful coastal scenery.

3. Alfambra

Take the N120 and head to Aljezur.  From here take a trip to The South East National Park.
Spend some time  soaking up the beauty of this area, with its rugged coasts and spectacular views.  There are also plenty of empty beaches, inlets and marshes to explore, as well as rare and protected wildlife.

4. Monchique

Back on the N127, take a drive along this winding country road until you come to the market town of Monchique.  Situated in the centre of a forested area known as Serra de Monchique, this town is one of the highlights of your Faro road trip.  Make sure you catch the wonderful panoramic view of the Algarve.

5. Silves

Taking a southern route on the A266, you’ll come to the town of Porto de Lagos.  Porto de Lagos is a great place to stretch your legs and there are plenty of restaurants to try out the local seafood.

With full bellies, continue on to Silves, the historic home of red sandstone castles built by Roman and Moorish settlers.  If you’re heading back to Faro take the N125.
