Frankfurt Car Hire Customers Pay the Price for Clean Air
Posted on November 25, 2008 by Fiona Hilliard
Since October 1 this year all motorists entering Frankfurt am Main Germany have to buy a special low-emission sticker for their cars. The city’s Low-Emission Zone encompasses the area of ‘Highwayring’ bordered by the highways of A5 in the west, A3 in the South and A661 in the north. Most of the city’s urban area now belongs to the zone, meaning stickers are obligatory if you’re travelling to the city centre with Frankfurt car hire.
The new law applies to locals as well as drivers from all over Germany or abroad and forces the drivers of un-eco vehicles (petrol-driven cars without catalyser and diesel-driven vehicles without filter) to leave their vehicles in the car parks in the outskirts and use public transport to get into the city.
If you’re not swayed by the prospect of clean air, then the threatening fine should be a good motivation for drivers to cough up-the penalty for driving in the zone without the green, yellow or red sticker is a €40 fine.
