GPS Brings Berlin Wall Back to the Future

Tourists travelling to Berlin will find the Berlin Wall reinstated next month when a new GPS gadget is made available to rent.

From May 1, the handheld GPS device will allow visitors walking through the city to see what the famous Cold War barrier looked like at the spot where they are standing.

The MauerGuide (Wall Guide), is the latest iniative by the German government who are attempting to preserve the history of the Wall which was erected in 1961 by the communist regime of East Germany to prevent a mass exodus of its citizens.

Since the rebuilding of the city, visitors have found it increasingly difficult to decipher where the city’s divide once stood.

Using GPS technology, the MauerGuide offers pictures, video footage and audio recordings on the history of the Berlin Wall at five prominent sites along the wall’s former route.

The commentary is available in English and German and allows tourists to avoid groups of tour groups and find thir way on their own, said manufacturer Antenna Audio.
