Just when you thought driving tests couldn’t get any more nerve-wracking, testers in the UK have just added a new twist.  Drivers will now not only conclude their test with a pass or a fail, but also receive an assessment on whether their driving is eco-friendly.

Drivers will not fail if their green credentials are below par, but they will be advised on how to make their driving greener.

According to Department of Transport trials, new ‘eco-safe’ driving techniques can save up to a month’s worth of fuel every year.

Their trials showed that depending on the driver’s experience between 5% and 17% of fuel can be saved with a few simple changes to the driver’s habits.

UK Testers will now be looking out for the following, which can also be applied to everyday driving and car rental:

  • Taking it smooth: Avoiding harsh acceleration and braking saves fuel and reduces wear and tear.  It leaves drivers feeling more relaxed too.
  • Anticipation: By looking as far as possible up the road, it’s possible to reduce stop/start driving, cutting down on fuel consumption and making you a safer driver into the deal.
  • Lose weight: Removing unnecessary clutter from your car means you’ll use less fuel.
  • Improve Your Aerodynamics: If your roof rack is not a necessity, it’s a good idea to remove it as it’s probably reducing the fuel efficiency of your car.

I love the idea of this article. In everything we do,we should always pay attention if it’s environment friendly. With driving, air pollution is the major concern in which we have to be aware on how to prevent it.
