How to Find the Cheapest Petrol

Posted on August 26, 2009 by Fiona Hilliard

So you’ve saved on your car hire by booking with Argus, but what happens when you get out on the open-road and you’re running low on fuel, food and er, money.

Well, the web is awash with all kinds of sites that promise to locate the cheapest places to fill-up on fuel and snacks, but the best ones we’ve tracked down include the UK sites Keep Moving and PetrolPrices.com and a US site called Gas Buddy.

If you’re using Gas Buddy, simply search for your destination in the US or Canada  and the site will return a list of the latest prices – all of which have been posted by volunteer spotters who take time out to provide updates for towns and cities in each state.

Meanwhile, in the UK, PetrolPrices.com covers 9,541 petrol stations and offers 8,000 daily updates.

Feeling peckish en-route, but watching the pennies?  Check out Keep Moving’s Cheap Food tool.  Type in the main UK route that you’ll be following e.g. M6 or A27 and the time you’re prepared to spend looking for cheap eats (there’s a cut-off point of 5 minutes) and within a few seconds you’re presented with a map that’s dotted with shopping trolley and ‘s’ icons – pinpointing the closest supermarkets and service stations on your route.

Gas Buddy is now also available as an iPhone application, while PetrolPrices.com can be found twittering the latest bargains on Twitter.
