How to Save Gas on US Road Trips
Posted on October 01, 2008 by Fiona Hilliard
As any seasoned road-tripper will know, even the most jaw-droppingly scenic drive can grow repetitive after 500 miles. You’ve seen one sea view, you’ve seen them all, right? Not only do you lose interest along the way, you also lose petrol, fast. To avoid boredom and more importantly, having to re-fill your car rental needlessly, it’s sometimes worth re-considering your itinerary.
Take the Pacific Highway for example. How about taking the ‘lite’ version?
Pacific Coast Highway Highlights
Instead of the long drive from Dana Point (The southern starting point of the Pacific Coast Highway) to Leggett (the most northernly point), in the Redwood Empire, focus only on the most beautiful section, the scenery that you’ll most probably be photographing!
Start your trip to Santa Cruz at San Luis Obispo and include Hearst castle, Big Sur and Monterey in your itinerary.
Get your Kicks on Route 66 for Less:
Focus on driving on a small section of the original route rather than wasting time (and fuel) on newer routes that have been swallowed up by Interstate 40. For a cheaper, more authentic road trip, take a drive through the small gold-rush town of Oatman Arizona or the section through Williams Arizona which is mentioned in the National Register of Historic Places. It’s en route to the Grand Canyon so you pack a lot more in to your journey.
