Lesbos Islanders Head to Court Over Gay Name
Inhabitants of Greece’s third largest island Lesbos are heading to court to challenge their right to call themselve’s Lesbians.
Dimitris Lambrou is leading the submission of the case under the premise that the International dominance of the word in it’s sexual context violates the human rights of the islanders and disgraces them around the world.
An early court date is being set to decide whether to put in place the requested injunction forcing the Gay and Lesbian Community of Greece to change their name.
It is thought if the movement is succesful in Greece then the next step for the islanders is to take the campaign to the international stage.
The term Lesbian was first mentioned by Sappho a poet and native of Lesbos who expressed her love for other women in her writings dating from the 7th Century BC.
The group seeking the injunction though challenges this quoting new historical research that has found Sappho had a family and ended her life with suicide over the love of a man.
