Life’s a Picnic for Bulgarian Drivers

Posted on September 16, 2009 by Fiona Hilliard

From today, Bulgarian car hire customers who show courtesy to pedestrians in the country’s capital will be rewarded in an unusual way.  They’ll be handed a salami sandwich.

In a new road safety initiative dreamt up by authorities in Sofia, officers will present drivers with a free salami sandwich if they give way to pedestrians at crossings.

In a city where drivers rarely give way to pedestrians, even at designated crossings it’s a real incentive – provided that is, you like salami sandwiches.

The partnership between local road traffic police and the salami factory is just one of a series of preventative measures launched in Bulgaria to coincide with the first day of the school year.  It is hoped the campaign will both prevent children from being involved in road accidents and improve the safety of all pedestrians in Sofia.

What do you think?  Would a salami sandwich make you think twice about stopping at a zebra crossing? Leave a comment and let us know your thoughts!
