So what are you going to do in between matches? Well, you certainly won’t be bored, the tournament’s seven venues just happen to be located in and around the country’s most exciting cities.
Top Tourist Attractions in South Africa:
Cape Town:
Visit the iconic Table Mountain via cable car. A one-way return costs R74-145. Alternatively, you could put your best foot forward and have a go at hiking it. If sailing floats your boat, take a trip to Robben Island prison, where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. Ferries set sail on the hour from Waterfront. Cycling more your thing? The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve is perfect for a scenic bike ride. Entry costs from R60.
Johannesburg:
The city is experiencing something of a regeneration right now. The epicentre of this cultural renaissance is Newtown. Must-sees include the Apartheid Museum (entry R40). After a tour of the museum, take a trip west to Melville, a bohemian hangout brimming with cafes, bars and second hand stores. You should also set some time aside to visit Soweto, the world’s most famous township. For an authentic experience, why not stay the night in one of the town’s purpose-built shacks?
Pretoria:
Clamber up the impressive Herbert-Baker Union Buildings and survey the stunningly pretty terraced gardens.  After all that trekking, relax in Burgers Park, the city’s green lung. A trip to the city’s Transvaal Museum (entry R80) will help you to get to grips with South Africa’s natural history, while a visit to Freedom Park is a must for those wishing to pay respect to the hundreds of people who sacrificed their lives for freedom.Â
Durban:
Take a look around the KwaZulu-Natal capital’s many museums, here you’ll find fine collections of local tribal crafts and artifacts. Alternatively, get outdoors and enjoy the 6km of beautiful beaches or see real-life sharks at play in uShaka Marine World (entry R74).
Port Elizabeth:
Soak up some history at the South End Museum (free entry), before taking in the stunning sights of the Garden Route. You may also want to educate yourself on local wildlife at Bayworld, (entry R40) or if you’ve got a head for heights, take a trip across the world’s highest narrow gauge bridge on the Apple Express steam train, (tickets R130).
Bloemfontein:
Find out where the ANC party started life by taking a guided tour of Manguang Township. There are plenty of museums to hold your interest too. Those that come highly recommended  include the Anglo Boer War Museum (entry R10) and the National Museum (entry R10), which features a reconstruction of a 19th-century South African street.Â
Rustenburg:
Consider this large country town on the edge of the Magaliesberg Mountains as a base from which you discover gambler’s haven Sun City in all its glitz and glory. One armed bandits not for you? Get away from casino land and head straight for Pilanesberg Game Reserve, (entry R45). Incidentally, should you fall for the glitter of Sun City, don’t feel too bad about losing against the house, your loss helps to pay the salaries of over 3500 workers.  Â
