London On a Shoestring

Posted on February 13, 2012 by Fiona Hilliard

All over London car rental desks and hotel managers are getting ready to push up their prices, as demand for transport and accommodation peaks in the run up to the Olympics. A trip to London doesn’t have to mean empty pockets this summer.
There are plenty of ways to enjoy the city without breaking the bank. London is famous for its glittering lights, world-renowned theatre district and top class restaurants – but all these are likely to come with a hefty price tag. Don’t be dismayed, however, as there are plenty of things you can do in the capital that won’t cost you a penny. You don’t need to break the bank if you fancy a weekend away in Britain’s biggest city, and it only takes a bit of imagination to find out what there is to do in London that will allow you to get the most out of your trip on a budget.

Hyde Park

Take it easy in Hyde Park

One place that is just waiting to be discovered by you is Hyde Park. This green space is a welcome respite from the busy city and stretches across more than 350 acres. There are over 4,000 trees, a meadow, horse trails and a lake here, which makes it the perfect place to head to if you want to see a different side to the capital. By simply strolling through the tranquil park, you will come across monuments and statues galore, from the Diana Fountain to the 7 July Memorial. There are lots of things for you to happen on by merely meandering through the labyrinth of trees and paths. Britain’s answer to New York’s Central Park also offers plenty of activities to take part in. Having a ride in a paddle boat on its huge lake is a wonderful activity on a warm summer’s day, perfect if you follow it with a delicious ice-cream and relaxing amble under the canopy of the trees. Of course, another reason to head to Hyde Park – whatever the weather – is that it makes for a great way to walk around the city, with some of the capital’s biggest attractions located at different corners of the park, from Harrods and the Science Museum to Bond Street and Kensington Palace.

Covent Garden

Covent Garden

Another gem in London that doesn’t cost a thing to visit is Covent Garden. This open-air market set in the heart of the city offers a wealth of different attractions for tourists to soak up. Covent Garden has been home to market stalls for hundreds of years, allowing holidaymakers to experience a little of London’s history, as well as pick up a few souvenirs. Along with the fruit and veg that were originally sold here, you will now find a huge variety of different items. Pick up books, music, clothes, jewellery and toiletries at the market – or why not return home with arts and crafts gifts for your friends and family? You could spend all day perusing the many stalls at the Apple Market, East Colonnade Market and Jubilee Market without boredom creeping in. The great thing about Covent Garden is, if you do need to take a break, there are eateries aplenty where you can sit down, put down your shopping bags and replenish yourself. Cafes and restaurants that overlook the market itself are a great place to stop for an hour or so, as you can soak up the bustling atmosphere and indulge in some people-watching while sipping on your cappuccino. As well as taking a look at the many passersby, you will be able to spot street performers – from musicians to magicians – as they put on spectacular shows for those walking by.

Another location that is synonymous with its marketplace is Camden Town. Head here and you will find yourself lost in a world of stalls selling clothes, handmade crafts, jewellery, music, paintings and food. More than 150,000 people head to this area of north London every week to pick up a bargain, with many great deals to be found while perusing the maze of stands. As well as its numerous stalls, abundant shopping centre and eclectic atmosphere, Camden is a great location to see the many different colours of London, with antiques sold alongside CDs and contemporary restaurants situated on its historic lock. You don’t need to blow your finances on a visit to London – just think outside the box and you could enjoy an even more fun and fulfilling short break than you had hoped for!
