Maiden Flight for Bio Fuel Jet
The first tentative steps towards greener air travel were taken last night when Virgin Atlantic launched a Boeing 747 partly powered by biofuels extracted from coconut oil on a test flight from London .
The flight was the first of its kind and took off on Sunday from London on a short trip to Amsterdam. The airline is regarding the landmark flight as the dawn of a new era in eco-friendly airline travel.
The Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 carrying biofuels mixed with traditional kerosene took off from London around midday (1200 GMT). There were no passengers on board.
The plane was powered by a blend of babassu oil (extracted from the nuts of the babassu tree) and coconut oil. Both products are found most commonly in cosmetics like lip balm and shaving foam.
Virgin Atlantic CEO Richard Branson greeted the news of the flight as a breakthrough for the airline industry and proof that there are alternatives to traditional jet fuel.
