Michael O’ Leary: Let Them Lick Ice

It doesn’t get much lower, not even by Ryanair’s standards. Get this – on Monday evening (Christmas week), thirsty passengers stranded on a crowded Ryanair flight from Stansted to Dinard were forced to lick ice cubes for water, when cabin crew refused to serve them refreshments because “rules” prohibited it as the flight had not taken off.

The flight was scheduled to leave Stansted at 3.50pm on Monday night but was still on the ground at 8pm due to wintry conditions.

Passengers who asked to be let off the plane were told they would have to stay on the runway until it had been cleared of snow.

A spokesperson for Ryanair said the bar could not be opened, due to Inland Revenue implications. So, despite increasingly warm and stuffy conditions in the cabin, the only water served up by crew was ice cubes in plastic cups.

Michael O’ Leary famously once said: “At the moment, the ice is free, but if we could find a way of targeting a price on it, we would.”

He must be kicking himself now.
