Germany car hire customers  will have to display an ‘environmental badge’ or face a €40 fine in some cities from this summer onwards.  Green zones have been introduced in 12 German cities in an effort to reduce pollution.  Customers booking Berlin car hire, Hanover car hire and Stuttgart car hire will be affected.  Cars are graded based on European emission standards.  The badges can be bought in Germany for €5-€10 at registration offices, exhaust emission testing centres and garages.

Anyone renting a car in the affected cities should consult the terms and conditions of their car hire company to check whether they are covered.
