New York, New York

Times Square

10am: After 8 hours on the road we arrived in New York. Before I launch into describing the city that never sleeps, I’d like to offer a word of advice to anyone planning to drive from Canada to the US: We left Montreal at two in the morning and spent almost an hour at the border crossing. If that’s the kind of wait for someone in the early hours, I dread to think what queues are like during the day!

So here we were in the Big Apple. The city isn’t really what I expected. Well, Manhattan is just like it is in the movies, all shiny skyscrapers and neon lights but there are other corners of the city where it’s as easy to find pockets of quietness as it is the famous razzle dazzle. The overall impression I got was that New York has a lived-in feel to it. It’s also hectic and vibrant, there was always something unusual to see or something going on. A lot of the time it was for free!
We found a hostel close to Central Park, so we were right in the centre of things. Manhattan isn’t a good city to drive in, (parking is expensive and traffic is chaotic) so we took the subway or walked to most of the touristy places. Our car hire came to the rescue though when a friend called, inviting us to dinner. It was an hour’s drive away so we got to see a whole other side to New York. You know, the suburban bit that you don’t see on TV so much…
