The spiralling cost of aviation fuel has led United Airlines to scrap over a fifth of its fleet of aircraft as the industry struggles with ever-increasing costs amid new forecasts that the sector faces a $60bn (£30.7bn) funding gap.

The US airline announced yesterday that it was retiring 100 of its 455 planes (94 short haul Boeing 737s and six jumbo jets).

United had planned to ground just 30 aircraft.  The number of job losses at the airline is now expected to rise from 500 to between 1400 and 1600.

The airline’s budget brand, Ted is also due to be axed.

Popular holiday destinations will be most affected.  According to a study by USA Today, Orlando and Las Vegas are facing significant losses while Hawaii is expected to have 25% fewer flights when October timetables are announced.
