Ryanair to Make Passengers Stand
Posted on July 06, 2009 by Fiona Hilliard
How’s this for ‘no frills’…
Ryanair wants to introduce standing room on airplanes.
Before you start conjuring up images of passengers clinging monkey-like to over head bars, the airline has revealed that it is thinking more along the lines of “bar stools” with seat belts around the waist.
Ah, infinitely more classy then.
The low fares boss has already been in talks with US aircraft manufacturer Boeing about designing an airplane with standing room.
He has even gone so far as to seek approval from the Irish Aviation Authority.
He’ll have to cross his fingers for this one, having already been knocked back for fat tax and coin-operated toilets.
A Ryanair spokesperson told The Sun newspaper “If they approve it, we’ll be doing it.”
The airline estimates that space could be made for up to 50 per cent more passengers and costs could be cut by up to 20 per cent.
Apparently Mr O’ Leary got the idea from Chinese airline Spring, which has put forward similar plans.
And there we were thinking they broke the mould when they made him.
