Should I Rent A Car in Zagreb?

Renting a car in Croatia is both extremely handy and a little bit nightmarish.  If you hire a car in Zagreb you will discover that the city can get congested in the summer and on sunny weekends, especially if you’re driving back and forth to the beaches.  Getting to the Croatian Coast from Zagreb has become much easier since the recent opening of the Zagreb-Split motorway. The motorway links up the two cities in about four hours.  In future years it is hoped that the motorway will join Split to Dubrovnik.  This will make the Zagreb to Dubrovnik trip stress-free. At the moment, you will be travelling on a two-lane scenic coastal road.  You’ll need to be extra careful though, as around here, over-taking on hairpin bends is something of a national sport.

Drivers should be aware that police regularly check motorists for drinking and driving and request breath tests even after the most minor accidents. Defensive behaviour will not be tolerated if you’re stopped. Anyone who refuses to submit to a blood test will be automatically assumed to be driving while intoxicated.

So that’s the bad news over with.  On the up side, Zagreb car hire gives you the independence to travel wherever you like, whenever you like.  It also allows you to find accommodation in more out of the way places, which are usually only accessible by car.  If you plan on discovering the islands in more detail, you’ll have your very own set of wheels to take you from hotel to beach, rather than depending on the often-unreliable public transport.  If you decide to opt for car rental, you’ll find most car rental companies have outlets in Croatia or Trieste, which a popular stopping off point for holidays in Croatia.
