If you’re dreaming about the US or Europe for a cut-price road trip adventure, snap out of it and get back to the drawing board. Now. According to a new study, Venezuela is where you should be setting your sights.  Apparently petrol runs like water here and is cheap as the air you breathe (or almost).

There is the small matter of possible car jackings, pollution and a faint whiff of corruption to contend with however.

But if you’re prepared to live dangerously, you too can fill up at the petrol pumps for as little as 2p per litre. The controversial South American country is top of the charts when it comes to places to find cheap fuel.

When you think about it,  at this rate, the average European family car could be running on a full tank for less than the price of a litre of fuel in the UK.

However expensive it may seem to fill up at times – drivers in the UK don’t actually pay the highest prices in Europe.  In the Norwegian capital, Oslo, drivers fork out an average of 164p per litre – up to 30p more than the UK average.

The second cheapest place to fill up on fuel in the world is Saudi Arabia, a country that holds a quarter of the world’s fuel reserves.  Drivers here pay around 8p per litre.

In Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, drivers pay the princely sum of 12p per litre for fuel costs. There’s no need to pity them however.  All drivers living there are entitled to 120 litres of free fuel per month – nice work if you can get it.

You’ll have to travel far to find the cheapest fuel…
Caracas, Venezuela: 2p per litre (average)
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: 8p per litre
Tripoli, Libya: 9p per litre
Ashgabat, Turkmenistan: 2p per litre
Manama, Bahrain: 13p per litre
Kuwait City, Kuwait: 14p per litre
Doha, Qatar: 15p per litre
Cairo, Egypt: 19p per litre
Muscat, Oman: 20p per litre
Algiers, Algeria: 20p per litre
