Tip of the Week: Car Rental Insurance

Posted on June 23, 2009 by Fiona Hilliard

This week our Tip of the Week  has been inspired by a customer called Jane who emailed us with a question about insurance:

I am thinking about renting a car in Barcelona.  I know it’s a beautiful city, (I’ve been there 3 times over the last 18 months) but I’ve never driven there and I’ve heard car crime levels are quite high.  Am I right in thinking that the insurance included with my booking will cover me?

Hi Jane

All of our rates include Theft Insurance, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Third Party Insurance (TPI).  In the event that you vehicle gets broken into or stolen, then a sum of money (an excess) will be paid by you.  For example, in the UK the excess payable on the Collision Damage Waiver and Theft Protection Policy is £600.  This will vary based on the car size.  Optional insurances which aren’t automatically included in your car hire will either reduce this excess or waive it completely.  These can be purchased at the desk when you pick up the car, but are completely optional so it really is up to you.  As a safety tip, we always advise our customers to remove the identifying tag (usually on the key ring of the vehicle) and store it safely elsewhere.  This helps make the car less conspicuous for would-be thieves.
