Top Three US Drives

Posted on September 15, 2008 by Fiona Hilliard

All set for a trip of a lifetime across the US?  If you’re still undecided about you’re exact route, it may be worth taking a gander at “The Americas: Where to Go When”, out October 1.  Can’t wait ‘til then? Check out three of our favourites.

1. Highway 101, Oregon

Around every corner of this stunning 350-mile road you turn, you’ll encounter another hidden gem.  Whether it’s dramatic waves crashing off the cliffs of Cape Kiwanda, ancient sea stacks off the coast of Bandon, Cape Perpetua carpeted in rainforest and the zingy scent of pine trees mixing with salty sea air.

Where to Rent A Car:  Portland Airport is the most convenient pick-up point.  Hire a car here and follow route 30 to Astoria, where the highway begins.

2. Great River Road, Midwest, US

This long and winding road takes you on an adventure through four Midwestern states, kicking off in Saint Paul, Minnesota and winding down in Dubuque, Iowa.  The journey takes you over hills and dusty Native American trails, past early pioneer log cabins and through early pioneer log cabins and charming little villages.

Where to Rent A Car:  One way rental from Minnepolis –St Paul Airport to Dubuque regional airport.

3. The Alcan Highway, Canada to Alaska

One of America’s ultimate road trips.  This route was made for camper van hire.  Starting at Dawson Creek, British Colombia, (and no, it’s not the set of the TV show) notch up 1400 miles of wilderness past wilderness, rolling mountains, grizzly bears and frolicking caribou until you roll into Delta Junction, the end of the highway.

Where to Rent A Car:  Dawson Creek has a regional airport, but the bst place to rent your vehicle is Calgary Airport or Edmonton Airport.  If you book a one-way rental. you’ll be able to fly out of Fairbanks.
