Travel writer and blogger Liz Borod Wright is currently travelling around Portugal and Spain with Lisbon car hire courtesy of ArgusCarHire.com. In her latest blog update, she experiences a serious case of déjà vu when she encounters the city’s picture-perfect 25 de Abril Bridge. She’s not alone, as anyone who has visited the city will tell you,  the bridge is indeed a dead-ringer for San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.

Captivating: 25 de Abril Bridge

Driving across the 25 de Abril bridge: The 25th of April Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril) is recognised as one of the longest suspension bridges in central Europe. The drive across the bridge (also visible from the air to passengers arriving in Lisbon) offers spectacular views of the city. The bridge is widely used as a suburban road for reaching all the towns located to the south of Lisbon and the beach of Costa da Caparica. The bridge carries a toll but this only applies to vehicles entering Lisbon – if you’re travelling outside of Lisbon you can cross for free.

Tip: After dark, the lively Docas marina area (located beneath the bridge) is the perfect place to sample Lisbon’s thriving nightlife. Expect huge queues though on weekends for Lux – the nightclub is owned by screen legend John Malkovich and is the city’s premier clubbing venue.

Photographing the Bridge: There is an excellent view of the bridge from the Christ (Cristo Rei) monument, which is situated across the river. To get there, hop on board the commuter ferry from Cais do Sodre Station to Cacilhas. The ferry crossing provides an excellent opportunity to check out Lisbon’s spectacular architecture, its higgledy- piggledy skyline and of course, the bridge.
