UK Fuel Strike Ends
UK car hire drivers in a panic over petrol shortages can rest easy, for the moment at least. The fuel strike, which has seen hundreds of fuel tank drivers in the UK take to the the picket line, has come to an end. Their pay dispute remains in deadlock however.
Leaders of the Unite union and representatives from two haulage companies which deliver petrol and diesel to Shell garages were in talks for over three hours at a secret location but they could not reach an agreement.
In a statement, fuel delivery firms Hoyer and Suckling said: “ the meeting was helpful and both sides have agreed to adjourn to reflect on today’s discussions.”
Already the four-day stoppage has left many garages without fuel and further industrial action is on the cards if the pay dispute is unresolved.
Commenting on the scramble for fuel, AA president Edmund King said: “ The impact of the strike is really being felt, particularly in Wales and the South West.
“In some areas motorists are struggling to find fuel. We would like to see clearer signing at the garages as it not always clear that pumps have run dry and motorists are wasting precious fuel by entering the forecourts.”
