A huge cloud of volcanic ash drifting from Iceland has forced all UK air space to the north of London to shutdown. The closure means hundreds of flights have been cancelled and the disruption is set to worsen later today.
Air traffic controllers in Brussels issued warnings to pilots that all airspace north of London should be closed until further notice. The whole of London’s airspace will be closed from 11am until 7pm at the earliest.
British Airways has already cancelled all flights scheduled for April 15th.
Ryanair has also cancelled all flights to and from Britain. Huge delays are expected tomorrow.
Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen airports have also been closed until further notice. Passengers are advised not to travel to these terminals.
Flight information for London Heathrow can be seen here.
Flight information for easyJet can be seen here.
Flight information for Edinburgh Airport can be seen here.
Flight information for Glasgow Airport is available here.
Flight information for Dublin Airport is available here.
Flights in Norway and other parts of northern Europe have also been affected.
Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano (try saying that three times fast) is responsible for the disruption. The volcano erupted on March 20th after lying dorment for almost 200 years. Last month’s eruption caused minimal disturbance, but Tuesday’s eruption started from a different vent, under a 650ft (200m) dense block of ice, which set forth a giant wave of glacial meltwater.
Concerned passengers should contact their airline for further advice.
