US Car Hire Road Trip Safety Tips

A US road trip is the adventure of a lifetime.  There’s nothing quite like the thrill of following Route 66 or the Pacific Coast Highway with US car hire.  At Argus Car Hire, customer safety is paramount.  We want you to get the best from your US touring experience, that’s why we’ve come up with the following tips to help you have a hassle-free trip:

  • Make sure you’re familiar with the route you’re taking.  If you’re uncertain about the best route to take, pick up a map at your rental counter and ask your car rental rental representative about directions.  Before hitting the road, take some time to plan your route carefully.  Think about where you could stop if you get lost, especially if you’re going to be driving in the dark.
  • If you’re feeling unsure of your surroundings, roll up car windows and lock doors when driving or parked.
  • Don’t pick up hitchhikers.
  • Ensure you’re familiar with your car’s equipment before leaving your pick-up point.  Check the wiper blades, headlights, door locks and radio.  Make sure you know where the spare tyre is kept and which side the fuel cap is on.
  • Hide any valuables or personal effects.  Lock luggage, laptops, bags and expensive/important items in the boot of the car or take them with you when you leave the car.
  • If you’ve taken a wrong turn and become lost, don’t pull over on a dark road to read your map.  Drive to the nearest town or well-lit public area such as a roadside diner or gas station.
  •  Always park your rental vehicle in a well-lit area and ensure that you have your keys in your hand when you’re approaching your vehicle.
  • In the unlikely event that you feel you’re being followed, call 911 from your mobile phone or drive to a well-lit public area and call the police.
