US Car Rental: Buyers Beware

US clients looking to rent a car in Europe should note that VAT charges apply to most car rentals in Europe.  This follows reports of a US car rental customer being left stunned to find extra charges amounting to $170 (€115) on his credit card bill when he booked his Croatia car hire with carRentals.com.

Kenneth F. Oehrle booked the rental car with Sixt in Croatia under the impression from his booking confirmation form that there would be no extra taxes and fees.

The additional fees amounted to 22% VAT, an airport location fee and an extra rental day charge.

VAT is added onto car rentals in most European countries.  It can increase rental cost estimations significantly, in the case of Croatia VAT stands at 22 percent.  VAT charged on rental cars and hotel stays isn’t refundable and is unavoidable.
