Skiathos may still be reaping the rewards of its cameo appearance in Mama Mia, but those who associate the all-sing all-dancing Greek island  with pricey vespa and scooter rental may be surprised to find that it is the perfect place to explore with cheap Skiathos car rental.

Thanks to Meryl and Co,  Skiathos and neighbouring Skopelos have become the most visited islands in the Sporades group, attracting thousands of tourists annually. The island of Skiathos is just 6km wide and 11km long. Those who rent a car here  discover unspoilt landscapes with shady woods, colourful olive and walnut groves and idyllic beaches. The pretty marina in Skiathos Town is lined with traditional bars and charming little eateries. Boat trips can be organised so that you can visit the island or swim in the surrounding sparkling turquoise waters. Local attractions include the crumbling Venetian fortress which dates back to 1207 and the preserved 14th-century town of Kastro.

With Skiathos car hire you’re never far from the centre of all the action. The most famous beach on the island is Koukounaries, a sweeping 2km bay of fine golden sand and crystal clear waters, set in a pretty of lush pine forest. Skiathos draws hoards of visitors especially during July and August and offers good choice in terms of quality watersports facilities. Attractions worth seeing on the island include Panagia Kardasi, a tiny 19th century chapel, famous for its starry blue ceiling. The chapel is located high above Kastro, in the north of the island. Few sunworshippers get to enjoy the beautiful north coast where pine trees, olive groves and deserted monastries fill the void of plastic sun beds and towering high-rises. Those who take a chance on car hire in Skiathos rarely regret it.
