Dear Editor,

We’re taking the kids on a half-term trip to the Algarve at the end of this month.  We got a cheap package deal so we’re planning to rent a car in Faro Airport.  The thing is, we’re a bit worried about what the weather will be like as we’ve only ever been to Portugal in July and August.  Can you give us any tips on what we can expect weather-wise.  If it does end up being a washout (fingers crossed it won’t), are there any day trips you’d recommend?

Hi Sharon,

There’s no real need to worry about October and November temperatures in the Algarve region of Portugal.  With average temperatures simmering around the 20C mark, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to hit the beach.  You didn’t say what part of the Algarve you were holidaying in, but since you’ve rented a car, might I recommend Praia de Alvor in the Portimao area and the Praia de Marinha Beach.  Situated between Armacao de Pera and Carvoeiro, Praia de Marinha is a quiet, picturesque beach that is well worth driving to.

In the unlikely event that it does rain while you’re away, there are lots of nice places where you can bring the kids.

Albufeira offers a number of family-friendly attractions.  Zoomarine and Aqualand are two of the most popular rainy day destinations.  Covering an area of 8 hectares, this wildlife park features a range of animal shows including dolphin shows, tropical birds events and birds of prey shows. There’s also a planetarium, aquarium and 4D cinema. So you’re sure to find there are plenty of activities to distract you from grey skies!
