Why it Pays to Fill Up your Rental Car in the US
Posted on June 17, 2008 by Fiona Hilliard
A survey carried of eight rental companies carried out by USA Today has found some to be charging up to $8 (€5) a gallon at 10 airports including: Boston, Chicago O’ Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, LAX, Miami, New York JFK, San Francisco, Seattle-Tacoma and Reagan Washington National.
The prices were slapped on renters who return a car without a full tank of gas or don’t choose to prepay for a full tank at the car rental company’s set price.
The survey found the cheapest price last Wednesday to be $3.74 (€2.34) a gallon, charged by Thrifty at Dallas/Fort Worth airport. The most expensive price was $4.50 a gallon, charged by Avis and Budget at LAX. According to travel firm AAA, the average price throughout the country on the day of the survey was $4.05 (€2.61).
